Both Volumes by Chip Zdarsky
Howard the Duck is back! Join him as he takes on the weird cases that only a talking duck can crack as the Marvel Universe’s resident private investigator! Waugh!
I’d seen Howard show up a time or two in other Marvel books, and I always thought “Man, #$@% Howard the Duck!”. But then I got a free copy of Issue #1 from the second Chip Zdarsky volume (both released in 2015 to be extra confusing). Turns out, it’s actually a surprisingly funny book. Our lead is a cantankerous private detective who very quickly grows on you in a charming way. I immediately went back and read the first volume by Chip and grew to love Howard even more. Spiderman’s guest appearances were cracking me up. And despite being a humorous book through and through, at times, it got me seriously emotional. The loneliness Howard shows after being captured by the Collector and reflecting that he’s the last of his kind, his fervent desire to go back and save all the other members of the collection. And then there’s Linda and Shocket. Their appearance on the last page of issue #1 played a significant role in setting the hook in me. And the second issue that focused on them brought me to tears.
I’ve just read the first issue of the Squirrel Girl/Howard the Duck crossover, and it’s shaping up to be the absolute best crossover I’ve ever read. Ryan North & Chip Zdarsky joking back and forth in the bottom alt text – Fantastic! Howard thinks all cats look alike – Haha, ok! He gets kidnapped (again) to be hunted by a psycho-lady – Sure! Kraven uses Squirrel Girl’s tricks against her – Nice one! There’s a bionic cat – OMG, yes! Howard buys his suits in the children’s section – ME TOO! What’s not to love about this book?
